High School Fiber Optics Training

Illuminate Your Future with Fiber Optic Training

Fiber optics is a revolutionary field of technology that focuses on the transmission of data as light pulses through thin strands of glass or plastic fibers. Hands-on training is a crucial component of any fiber optics program. At the Jennings O’Neil Career Academy, students engage in laboratory exercises where they practice splicing, connecting, and testing fiber optic cables. These practical experiences are invaluable, as they prepare students for real-world scenarios and enhance their problem-solving skills.

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course (CFOT)

If you are interested in learning about fiber optic networking and becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician, this introductory course is for you. Explore the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, including the cost of installation. Train and hone your skills through a combination of theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare you to take the Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) test that is sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association (FOA) and administered on the final day of the course.

We will cover industry standards governing Fiber To The Desk (FTTD), Fiber To The Home (FTTH), LAN/WAN fiber networks, and discover the basics of fusion and mechanical splicing. Learn how to identify fiber types; recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards.

Premise Cable Training

Premise Cable Training program provides students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot low-voltage cabling systems used in commercial and residential buildings. This includes voice, data, video, and security cabling — essential for telecommunications and network infrastructure.

Training Focus Areas:

  • Introduction to Premise Cabling Systems: Understanding structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA-568), cable categories, and system design principles.
  • Copper Cabling Installation: Techniques for Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A cable routing, pulling, labeling, and support systems.
  • Termination & Testing: Hands-on training with modular connectors (RJ45), patch panels, punch-down blocks, and certification testing tools.
  • Fiber Optic Basics: Overview of fiber types, connectors, and safety practices for hybrid installations.
  • Blueprint Reading & Pathway Design: Interpreting floor plans, identifying communication rooms, and planning cable routes.
  • Safety & Industry Standards: OSHA-compliant safety procedures and BICSI standards for workmanship and performance.
  • Troubleshooting & Documentation: Diagnosing connectivity issues and maintaining accurate installation records.
