The Jennings O’Neil Career Academy’s purpose is to awaken potential, provide second-chance opportunities, and contribute to brighter futures:

We are Holistic

What sets JOCA apart from our peers is our unwavering belief in the power of transformation. We believe all youth, despite their past experiences or choices, are capable of reaching their highest potential. To achieve this, they need the support of a caring community. Our internal and external stakeholders are equally invested in the JOCA mission and collectively serve as a village for our students.

We are Targeted

We offer career and technical education opportunities to young adults ages 15 to 24 with a focus on trauma-exposed and/or at-risk populations. Our goal is to ensure our program participants are well equipped and fully prepared to enter the workforce. Therefore, we provide them with the necessary training and industry certifications to access high-potential and family-sustaining trade careers.

We are Attentive

Our small class sizes give students and faculty the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships. Instructors can give more personalized attention to students’ learning styles while underperforming students are more engaged and motivated to succeed.

We are Proactive and Progressive

Early exposure to skills in the trades sector allow our students to access in-demand jobs with competitive earning potential. It additionally allows them to access employee benefits including healthcare, tuition assistance, and 401Ks. Upon JOCA program completion, students who choose to attend college will have secured professional connections and developed a clear pathway to continue their educational journey. In addition, the in-demand skills they acquire can be used to provide financial support while in college.

Our curriculum utilizes out-of-school time to create momentum. Creating a clear and immediate pathway from high school graduation into the workforce leads to:

  • Gainful employment

  • Economic upward mobility

  • Diminished disparities in education

  • Reduction in the high school graduation achievement gap
